Roaming the Ruins

I got the inspiration from a trip my mom and I took to Rome to visit a friend. My mom dragged me to see the Colosseum and Palatine Hill. After being with a tour group I wanted to get away so we split from the group thinking we could get out faster. We ended up getting lost and it took us a very long time to find our way out. I had made a few short films already but wanted to try an animation because I wanted to test my skills as a cartoonist. The film was selected in the student section of the Inwood Film Festival in March 2020 and was shown at the 187 Film Festival in June 2020.

Hello, I am Vivien McNab . I have been making films since the age of six. I’ve always been intrigued by the way people made films and as I’ve grown up, I’ve learned more about the process. In 5th grade, I started editing on iMove. While enjoying the process, much was learned in piecing different clips together and discovering how to do effects. I‘ve started to notice certain things more in films like cut-aways and shaky cams. I’m fascinated with the film process and how different pieces of film are made. I also love to tell stories. When playing Dungeons and Dragons a lot with my friends, my favorite part is creating my characters. Figuring out what motivates them, what they want versus what they need is a passion of mine. Are they an anti-hero, or just neutral? I want to try and expand this fascination I have into the art of filmmaking and scriptwriting.

One movie that really inspires me is “Wolfwalkers,” by Cartoon Saloon. Not only is this a beautiful movie in the animation sense, but the cinematography and soundtrack really impressed me. The overview shots of the forest were my favorite scenes but also equally impressive is how they were able to switch from third person to first person in one scene without it being jarring. Here is my short animated film that was accepted by the Inwood Film Festival last March. I would love to learn more about the art of film.

Goldfish Gone

This was a movie I made with my friends for the 187 Film Festival in 2019. We collaborated on the concept, script and shooting. I did all the editing and added the audio and effects.
